The lack of effective and ongoing identity proofing enables criminals to prey upon more people, perpetrating crimes resulting in financial and personal loss including extortion, rape and even murder. Social media companies are being sued for allowing fake profiles to be asserted on their websites, but reviewing these manually is time prohibitive. If Twitter were to allow just anyone to apply for a badge? The wait for review would be over 22 years.
Today, we live in a world where COVID has forced our global society further online than ever before. Billions of people are building new relationships, many for the first time and this is leaving us all more vulnerable. People are forced to continually reassert identity in order to find work, a babysitter or even romance and this has caused identity to grow into a $3-Trillion Dollar business where fraudsters are targeting YOU, your family, and all of us, right now.

That's a big problem space. Also very relevant in peer-to-peer eCommerce (eBay, Craigslist, etc...) - it's totally plagued by scammers right now.
