We did this at Westfield Labs for Westfield back in 2014ish. The digital storefront pilot didn’t create the traction we hoped for, particularly the virtual storefronts. Some even got hacked by users 😅. (You might be able to search online and see all the luxury brands who tried this back in those years. Some tried it pop-up style with wall-sized interactive walls). Prior to Westfield while at Salesforce, I worked on another mortar-to-mobile experience for Burberry stores that recognized a visitor/customer who walked in their stores and the large interactive devices would curate items for them.
But there lots of learnings and even a few spin off businesses that came out of it, like one that offered (sold) shopper’s in-store behavioral insights. We worked on in-mall tracking which was cutting edge at the time. That technology helped us create unique experiences in airports. I’m sure there’s been tons of advancement in that space since then. Oh, this reminds me of another project I worked on for American Airlines before this where we created really intelligent experiences for elite travelers all connected to the airline’s agents dash. Dang, I’ve gone down memory lane now…
Also while I was at Salesforce about 8 years ago now, I designed an AR experience for a large university’s on-campus wayfinding experience. Interactive AR as you explored the campus. It’s been a long time since, I had almost forgotten.
