There seems to be an ad hoc approach to this - maybe a community is successful in organizing an effort or a news story resonates with people. Efforts have varying levels of success. This is especially problematic when the crowdfunding campaigns for the same land purchase. I'm sure there are situations where campaigns for the same cause have not succeeded because donors have been diluted.
This came to mind because the Congo has decided to auction off blocks of land containing rainforest and peatland (which are vital to removing carbon from the atmosphere) to oil companies. The Earth is obviously on the brink of disaster.

Joel, I like this but crowdfunding sounds like a solution rather than the unmet need.
