Always preferred Herrmann's HBDI over any "personality test" because they focus instead on identifying communication styles. Training can then follow to help people a.) recognize when the situation or person requires moving away from your default method of communication, and b.) building the skills to stretch into each mode of communication so it comes more and more naturally.

Agreed, though I'm not familiar with HBDI. I'll look it up! But yeah, a focus on skills and behaviors is going to get better results than assessing conceptual constructs like personality. I love personality tests but skills will be more valid psychometrically and more relatable for the client!
