CloudTrucks is definitively one of the tech start ups in this industry. Although luckily the market is very big, leaving opportunity for companies that niche down on certain demands of truckers and shippers a chance to win their business and help serve the large market demand for technology that helps make shipping and trucking business easier to manage for everyone.

Is CloudTrucks a direct competitor to what we're talking about?

Cloud Trucks would be a direct competitor if we focused on a Virtual Carrier program. Although Knowing the nature of the trucking business most of these owner operators are not attached to any brand, they would work with any company that can provide them the best solutions. What would differentiate us is the On demand shipping services and data backed driver recruiting/ Dedicated routes we could provide with the right optimization.

Thanks.

Can you define the term "virtual carrier" so that we all have the lingo down?

A Virtual Carrier program is when an independent truck driver that is not able to get good insurance to run their business decides to lease on to a bigger company that can provide the Department of Transportation Authority to run their business for a percentage of their gross revenue per load. For example Tom and Independent truck driver runs under Landstar, Cloudtrucks or LoadzPro Authority for 15% of his gross revenue generated per load. In exchange for the back office managment support and DOT authority to conduct his business.

@simon that's right. The model of Independent Contractor drivers operating under the authority of a carrier is not new (carriers hold the major liability insurance, manage safety & compliance, etc), but CT's "virtual" value prop is that they can lower the cost of operating expenses (insurance, etc) for the independent contractor through technology. "If you were going to rethink/ build a trucking company based on modern tech and processes, how would you do it?"

Their cofounder has a background (exited) in routing software/tech, but they also aggregate load boards for their drivers/contractors. (we had a driver in our lease program drive for them - didn't work out well for him). Now they are layering in a fintech service (CT Credit), which will be really interesting as that evolves - building credit, access to wages, etc are true value services for drivers and a great data pool.
